Under 5s engages children aged 2 – 5 years with art through lively online talks and a making activity. During July, Under 5s celebrates NAIDOC week and First Nations art and features the artwork Balarr (to become light), 2022 by Jenna Lee and Kojima Shoten currently on display in the exhibition Melbourne Now.
About the Artist
Artist-in-residence Jenna Lee is a Gulumerridjin (Larrakia), Wardaman and Karajarri Saltwater woman with Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Anglo-Australian ancestry. Her art builds on her father’s teachings of culture and the domestic crafts she learned from her mother.
Kindergartens, playgroups, and children at home will learn about how Jenna explored the connections between her Japanese and Indigenous Australian heritage by collaborating with traditional Kyoto-based artisans Kojima Shoten to create a series of lanterns in the shape of Gulumerridjin dilly bags decorated with symbols of the sun.
For Parents, Carers & Teachers
This program will prompt children to think about what they learn from their families and how cultural knowledge is passed down between generations through traditional craft techniques, like weaving and papercraft. Additionally, children can begin to discover how combining different traditional crafts can express multi-cultural identities.
This will be followed by a drawing activity created by Jenna, where she invites children to draw pictures of their favourite things on a dilly bag lantern to show who they are.
This activity is suitable to join from home, kindergarten or playgroup. Groups are welcome to attend.
