Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama loves to use polka dots in her paintings, sculptures and installations. Flowers are also important to Kusama because her family once owned a seed nursery, and she spent her childhood surrounded by plants and watching them grow.
Kusama made a large, colourful flower sculpture specially for the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2022 and it sits on a roof terrace overlooking Sydney Harbour. On your visit, you can walk around it and admire the shapes, dots and colours up close. Kusama made this artwork for everyone to enjoy, and she even wrote a poem to express the joy and passion she feels for the flowers.
In this workshop, we invite you to be inspired by Kusama’s artwork and make an artwork about something that makes you feel joyful. You can also compose a poem to express your passions and surround it with plants and flowers to brighten your day.
Take part anytime between 11am and 3.30pm. Materials and instructions are provided. Suitable for all ages.
