The Studio: Melt and Move at the Art Gallery of South Australia

  • Art Gallery of South Australia (map)

In response to Brent Harris’ exhibition Surrender and Catch, South Australian artist Emmaline Zanelli has designed a space for participants to engage in sensory play to experiment with biomorphism - a key technique used in Surrealism. This Studio prioritises ephemerality, transience, and going with the flow.

Visitors to the Studio will learn about Biomorphism which is a technique used by Surrealists characterised by shapes and bodies abstracted and simplified, often resembling microscopic organisms or confusing, unplaceable hybrid living forms. The ephemeral images that participants will make from cardboard will be photographed from above and projected onto the wall, further abstracting the shapes that are created. Funhouse mirrors will also line the walls, providing opportunity for visitors to see strange biomorphic possibilities inspired by their own reflections.

The collective has a central focus on open-format youth workshop experiences, and has worked with young people in Tarndanya as well as regional communities interstate to make process based art including disco parties, temporary fountains and cubby building.
