Hosted by Sharon Johal, celebrated Indian-Australian actor, writer and human rights advocate, Indian Community Day will celebrate the creativity and diversity of Victoria’s Indian community.
The free event will feature art, food, performance, dance, music and more for audiences of all ages.
Some highlights visitors will get to experience on the day will include:
A hands-on creative workshop for kids with Melbourne-based visual artist Bushra Hasan. Children will learn about the iconic rickshaw and get the chance to colour and draw their own
A vibrant and exhilarating Indian Dholi drumming performance to kick off the festivities
The NGV will transform the Great Hall into a dance floor for all ages, presenting an electrifying DJ set by DJ and music producer Pradip Sarkar aka Sikander
Interactive Bollywood performances and workshops by Ignite Bollywood located in the NGV Great Hall
An interactive panel discussion with Indian-Australian fashion designers Abha Gupta and Kudrat Makkar, moderated by SBS Radio host Preeti Jabal exploring the influence of traditional Indian garments on contemporary fashion design, where audiences will be invited to share their favourite fashion moments from their own upbringings
Chef Helly Raichura of Carlton North’s sought-after Indian diner, Enter via Laundry, will create a bespoke menu of Indian dishes and snacks especially for the day, served throughout the Great Hall and Gallery Kitchen
Visitors will have the chance to tour the NGV collection, including highlight works from the NGV Collection of Asian art, presented by Sunita Lewis, Project Officer, Asian Art
