Science is a Superpower Workshops at Scienceworks

A monthly series of hands-on workshops created specifically for girls and non-binary tweens! Research shows that 10-12 is a crucial age when many young girls drop out of STEM subjects and interests, and it’s vital to keep interest high with engaging and safe spaces. Plus, parents are included in the ticket for some perfect parents-daughter time.

Three different workshops, each themed around a very special superpower we hope to inspire in future women in STEM:

  • Energy is a Superpower (17 August) – Experience a thrilling love science show in the Lightning Room and have a chat with an expert woman in engineering before learning how to make paper circuits, creating a light up greeting card! Full information and tickets here: https://museumsvictoria.com.au/scienceworks/whats-on/energy-is-a-superpower/

  • Curiosity is a Superpower (7 September) – All about design and innovation in astronomy and space! Experience the wonder of the Melbourne Planetarium, have a chat with a STEM expert, and take part in a design challenge to design a place for a human to live on the Moon. Full information and tickets here: https://museumsvictoria.com.au/scienceworks/whats-on/curiosity-is-a-superpower/

  • Kindness is a Superpower (5 October) - Hear from an invertebrates researcher about biodiversity and the value of being kind to the environment, spend some time thinking about the future in the Think Ahead exhibition and will be challenged with creating a helpful robot companion, which will require designing and programming. Full information and tickets here: https://museumsvictoria.com.au/scienceworks/whats-on/kindness-is-a-superpower/

  • Calmness is a Superpower (26 October) - In this half day STEM workshop we’ll learn ways to calm the mind while clarifying your STEM skills. During the workshop, participants will be delighted by a Planetarium show, have a chat with an expert scientist, and take part in STEM activities that are good for a healthy mind including movement, mindfulness and making. • Strength is a Superpower (16 November) - In this half day STEM workshop, we explore the requirements of strong materials and how clever engineering can make difficult tasks easier. During the workshop, participants will view one of Scienceworks’ most entertaining science shows, have a chat with an expert scientist, and take part in a STEM challenge inspired by exoskeletons.
