OUR REVIEW OF HADESTOWN HERE.
#sydney REVIEW - When in town, head to Hadestown AU at Theatre Royal Sydney! I bought the last ticket to Hadestown on Sunday evening for the show’s first Australian performance last night not knowing what to expect of the show or the evening! Without exaggeration, I was blown away by the cheer excitement from everyone on the night. From lining up for the special trading cards activation photo, to grabbing a limited edition preview program, to the post show cast signing and gifted carnation to everything in between! The excitement in the theatre as the show started was unlike anything I had experienced before, from fans who have seen the show in London and Broadway to die hard fans who have listened to the music ever since it was created, to fans of the cast and musicians, to people who had never heard of the show - me included. I was not sure what to expect of Hadestown but I’m definitely in love with Hadestown now!
No spoilers as always, but I wanted to touch on the general synopsis of the story and the outstanding cast and musicians on the night. Hadestown is the story of two ancient Greek myths Orpheus and Eurydice and the tale of Hades and Persephone, the rest is for the taking and for you to experience! Christine Anu was for me the mother of guidance as Hermes - she was strong, observant and her voice and Aussie accent that came through at times was comforting and someone I looked up to. Noah Mullins as Orpheus was enchanting from the very first smile and note, his voice was not something of gods or morals but of an angel. For one split second during the show, time stood still and everyone was in awe of Orpheus and his performance in this beautiful set gave us goosebumps and tears! Abigail Adriano as Eurydice was reserved yet showed us her strength in her vocals. Adrian Tamburini as Hades alluded a strong presence with his distinct voice and charisma. Eleona Rokobaro as Persephone kept us by surprise with her charm, strong vocals and dances. The trio ladies of Fate brought so much sass and confidence on the night and the workers brought great singing to follow. The set reminded me of a gorgeous jazz club and the musicians were an outstanding part of this musical.
What can I say, if you’re still sitting on the fence about Hadestown, I wouldn’t wait any longer - it’s definitely something! I had an amazing evening thanks to everyone on the night performing but also the fans! I am now hoping the Australian cast record their vocals for an Aussie soundtrack of this amazing show! Hadestown is dark at times for the right reasons but it is above all a story of true love and hardship and the cast performance is something that I would like to show Miss to inspire her with her acting aspirations. Age recommendations 8 years+ however I would say that older kids will appreciate this show more due to the complexity of some scenes and there are a couple instances which mention adult themes. This production contains strobe lighting, theatrical haze and references to alcohol and adult themes.
