#melbourne REVIEW: 1984 BY George Orwell at the Comedy Theatre, Melbourne - on now until 6th July 2025. Renata and Anastasia caught this electrifying adaption tonight from the multi award-winning creative team at Shake & Stir (Frankenstein, Fantastic Mr Fox) and were thoroughly impressed. - here’s their review: “1984. A novel originally written by ‘George Orwell’ in 1949, and later created into a movie in the year 1984 itself. Many adaptations have been made, and one is starring in Melbourne as of this moment. The story follows a man by the name of ‘Winston Smith’, a man who internally shames Big Brother, rebelling against the idea of completely giving himself up to them. Committing crimes, doing what he should not be doing, but in our world, what he’s doing would not be seen as that bad. Many people he would many, many he would grow to love, no, to oppress. The only form of love should be towards Big Brother, the only form of thought should be towards the declaration of Big Brother, on how it is both right and just. You can explore further of his story by viewing the new stage play adaptation of Orwell’s story in our comedy theatre until Sunday. A wonderfully accurate recreation of the well known story, purchase tickets now, as Big Brother is always watching.”

Strap in for an electrifying take on the George Orwell classic – from the multi-award winning creative minds at Shake & Stir (Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, Animal Farm and Dracula).
It was a bright cold day, and the clocks were striking thirteen...
Winston Smith, an editor at the Ministry of Truth, sits quietly. A quick swig of gin; a glance of quiet optimism toward the telescreen. Winston opens his diary, puts pen to paper, and in doing so, commits the essential crime that contains all others in itself. A radical and unprecedented act of rebellion.
Discovered, entrapped, and incarcerated in the Ministry of Love, Winston, in defending his burning desire for personal freedom, prepares for the fight of his life. Can the oppressive forces of The Party, led by BIG BROTHER, obliterate the indomitable human spirit?
And what exactly awaits within Room 101?
