ROME: Empire, Power, People (Reviewed)

#melbourne REVIEW - ROME: Empire, Power, People at the Melbourne Museum. On now.

Renata and Anastasia headed along to the newly opened ROME: Empire, Power, People exhibition at Melbourne Museum. Having recently returned from Italy, Anastasia was especially excited to see the incredible collection of Roman artefacts and compare it to what she had experienced during her travels.

Here’s Anastasia: “Italian culture is rich in meals, history, activities, and so on, as the Melbourne Museum invites you to experience part of it! An exclusive exhibition about Rome and its powerful empire, featuring genuine, prestigious artefacts, brings history to life: ROME: Empire, Power, People.
Inside are well-crafted items from the past, from tall statues to grand gear, minuscule equipment, and ordinary utensils. All were seen and used by people with different experiences: the Romans of the past and the people of today. The exhibition is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, bringing people closer to Roman culture and genuine treasures from the past, brought to you at the Melbourne Museum. It is fit and educational for all ages, with an invitation to enjoy some delicacies linked to Italian culture at the front of the exhibition if you ever find yourself hungry. Brunetti offers classic meals shaped for your taste buds, from tiramisu to pizza, coffee, and some sweet treats too. Melbourne Museum also offers some activities for children to complete in order to fulfil their experience, like adding mosaics to monuments. The Roman Empire at Melbourne Museum is open now, and the gladiator arena is waiting for you.”

A Melbourne-exclusive exhibition, ROME: Empire, Power, People will open at Melbourne Museum on 1st April 2026, revealing the grandeur, spectacle and magnificent story of the Eternal City and the rise, rule and legacy of one of history’s most powerful civilisations.

The exhibition, designed by Museums Victoria and developed in collaboration with Contemporanea Progetti and curators from Museo Nazionale Romano and Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze, will draw on the extraordinary collections of two of Italy’s most prestigious museums for a never-before seen exhibition. Presented with the support of the Ministero della Cultura, Dipartimento per la valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale and Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Toscana.

The experience is a vibrant exploration of Rome’s political, cultural and social life, with over 150 objects dating from the Imperial period 1st Century CE to the 3rd Century CE, with all of the objects on display in Melbourne for the first time.

Featuring original statues, mosaics, frescoes, jewellery and everyday objects from the humblest to the most sumptuous, visitors will trace Ancient Rome’s legacy from the fall of Julius Caesar and the rise of the Empire, to the sophistication and luxury of Imperial Rome, the spectacle of the gladiator arena, and the bustling marketplaces and everyday lives of Romans.
