Whether you are a park parent, an arts & crafts parent, a working parent or an out & about parent, chances are that you need to plan at least one activity during the school holidays to keep little ones busy.

I’m definitely the organised, out & about parent and with an abundance of school holiday programs and activities on offer in Melbourne and surrounds, the choices really are limitless.

Whilst visiting Green Olive at Red Hill during a long weekend on the peninsula in February, I came across an advertisement for their School Holiday Program and knew straight away that it would be a perfect activity for the poppets.

Located just one hour from Melbourne in Main Ridge, Green Olive at Red Hill is a family owned and operated business encouraging children to enjoy and learn from the surroundings of a real working farm.  Their Farm Kids school holiday program gives children the opportunity to meet farm animals, learn about where food comes from, get creative in the kitchen and plants seeds while spending time outside in the fresh air and sunshine.

After much discussion and deliberation over which activity they wanted to participate in, the poppets chose the Kids Chicken Workshop from the appealing program - and what a good choice they made!  All three of us had such a fun time visiting and feeding the resident Isa brown chooks (who are guarded very closely by Pisa, the Maremma Sheepdog) and collecting freshly laid eggs from the chicken nesting trailer.  The excitement on their faces when they found an egg was just magical!

While the chefs were busy in the kitchen making and flipping the super cute chick-shaped pancakes, the children decorated plastic easter eggs which then had cotton wool, water and sprout seeds placed inside. We cannot wait to see them once they grow!

Once the pancakes were cooked and the egg shells sprouts carefully put away to take home, the poppets got to sit down and enjoy the yummy pancakes with homemade strawberry jam, the most perfect end to an egg-cellent morning.

Tip - Be sure to allow time after your session for a play in the outdoor play area.  Kids will love bouncing on the in-ground trampoline and climbing on the tall rope structure while you sit back and enjoy a cuppa and a piece of cake, some tapas or even a glass of wine from the estate vineyard.
