The People’s House: Sydney Opera House at 50 at the Museum of Sydney - Review
The People’s House: Sydney Opera House at 50 is a great FREE exhibition at the Museum of Sydney that celebrates 50 incredible years of this architectural beauty. On until 3rd March 2024.
Grab a scavenger hunt at reception and head on level 2 to discover this great exhibition. The kids liked Maestro and the LEGO® cutaway model of the Sydney Opera House and enjoyed the rest of the exhibition too which had lots of interesting aspects and interactive opportunities.
Maestro is an interactive space where kids and adults can contribute in an audiovisual performance by standing on either a circle at the front or back of the space and put their hands up to make music, shapes and sounds.
The kids enjoyed the scavenger hunt and liked guessing the number of lottery balls at the entrance, listening to video clips & music and looking at costumes from artists who performed at the Opera House throughout the years.
A member of staff told us that the internationally renowned Australian soprano Dame Joan Sutherland’s costume on display (first photo below) weighs 25 kilos and the mannequin was specially made to hold the dress, very interesting.
The lounge room was very cool with all the Sydney Opera House souvenirs in all the display cupboards.
The kids loved the LEGO® Sydney Opera House cutaway! They looked for some LEGO® characters as part of the Scavenger Hunt and had a lot of fun looking at this brilliant piece and all its pieces! They recognised the work from Brickman and his team on this one.
A staff was very kind to explain that this amazing piece was part of an earlier exhibition (2015 we believe) and was then acquired by the Museum of Sydney. It was then brought out and re-commissioned by Brickman with new characters (including my favourite Phantom of the Opera guy and others) for this current exhibition. Pretty awesome!
The studio was a great area for the kids to explore and have a feel for the different techniques and materials used for the build.
We also looked at the stage models on display which were very detailed. The kids also did some sketching at different models and stages of the Sydney Opera House.
The What’s in the News screen with short clips about the opening ceremony of the Sydney Opera House as well as other events held there throughout the years was very interesting too. There was also a wheel of dates on display. Visitors can enter their birthday or specific date and find out what happened at the Sydney Opera House on that day.
And finally the woven and shellwork Opera House models were very interesting to look at too. There’s also a small area on exit where people can contribute a sketch or a note to celebrate this anniversary.
A great exhibition for families to visit and explore all facets of this majestic and historical building!
