We were lucky to visit the Ocean Photographer of the Year 2023 exhibition on our recent visit to the Australian National Maritime Museum. The kids enjoyed looking at these amazing photos. Our favourite picture of the award was by far the first place winner of the award Jialing Cai from Philippines with her stunning photo of a paper nautilus.

And in second place, Andrei Savin’s photo fascinated us with his Sea anemone with crab. My heart sank with the third place winner image by Alvaro Herrero Lopez-Beltran of his photo of a humpback whale that dies a slow and painful death after being entangled in ropes and buoys, rendering its tail completely useless :(

At the entrance of the exhibition, a projected screen shows fascinating footage of some of the awarding works and invites visitors to provide their input on how we should preserve the ocean and its beautiful creatures.

We kept exploring through the exhibition and saw some great images of the Young Ocean Photographer of the Year award.

The Ocean Wildlife Photographer of the year winners were truly an eye opener, so were the Fine Art award category winners.

The kids did however spot some upsetting images in the Ocean Conservation (Impact) award category and could not comprehend the impact humans have had on our oceans and its beautiful species, a very upsetting and required reality to ensure future generations preserve and fight for what we have left.

Ocean Photographer of the Year 2023 at the Australian National Maritime Museum is a great exhibition for the whole family to visit and we highly recommend it.
