The Lovers at Theatre Royal Sydney - Review

“The Lovers is a musical full of love!” xo Busy City Kids

We headed to the Opening Night of The Lovers this Wednesday at the Theatre Royal Sydney expecting an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream but instead received a lesson in love that never grows old!

Laura Murphy’s inspiration for this fresh new musical started all the way back in her high school days, daydreaming about the romantic ideals of love we all dream of. And what a dream this musical was! The musical recounts the story of four young lovers who seek and risk everything in pursuit of their happy ending and forever after! It looks deep into our ideals of love in the past, present and future and how we have may have somehow along the way forgotten how to love in the pure and simple sense. The creative minds behind this production have transformed this classic tale into something new, fun, loving, very current to today and most of all funny, a joy to watch and full of love!

The Lovers on the night were Natalie Abbott as Helena, Jason Arrow as Demetrius, Loren Hunter as Hermia and Mat Verevis as Lysander who were equally charming, funny, talented and who owned the stage! A special mention to Natalie Abbott whose voice gave us chills and whose talent truly shone. I was so excited to finally see Jason Arrow on stage after missing him in Hamilton, Jason’s funny charisma and great moves on the night had me laughing! Jayme-Lee Hanekom as Puck and Stellar Perry as Oberon were charming matchmakers attempting to craft perfect love and finding themselves along the way. They had their unique style which made them standouts!

The musical came with a stunning and visual striking set, gorgeous costumes, great visuals and sound. The fun pop-inspired soundtrack was played by a talented band and accompanied by killer voices! Directed by Nick Skubij, who also directed Frankenstein (which amazed us!) and produced by Shake & Stir Theatre Co, creators of bold and daring shows, this musical will lift your heart and spirits and remind you to love!
