Vivid Sydney is back in 2023 with amazing new installations for Sydney families to enjoy!
There are over 58 family friendly installations and it will be hard to choose a few as they all look amazing!
But here’s our top 12 Kid Friendly Vivid Sydney 2023 Events:
1. Vivid House: An immersive 360° experience through 4 awe-inspiring artworks (AMA, Australian Oceans, Infinity and Invincible Corals). Head on a hyper-real journey across Australia’s mountain peaks, verdant valleys and more. Marvel at the beautiful resilience of corals. Experience oceanic photography like never before. Take a psychedelic trip through Sydney's hidden coves.
2. Wild Lights at Taronga Zoo: Head on an adventure through Taronga Zoo with Wild Lights, a brand-new illuminated night trail.
Be awe-struck by giant versions of native animals like koalas, dingos, kangaroos, emus, platypuses, rendered in intricate and illuminated designs by Nathan. Explore the entire Zoo along the trail, including the new Nura Diya Australia, an area celebrating native flora and fauna and First Nations connection to Country.
3. Losting: A jungle contained in a cube of double-mirrors. Losting is a portal into a strange, ever-shifting world as its mirrors oscillate between transparent and reflective, illuminated and dark.
4. Light Walk Journey at Tumbalong Park. Who said the adults should have all the fun? Round up the little ones and start your Light Walk Journey in Tumbalong Park at 5pm each Saturday during the festival as the stage lights up with FREE children’s acts ahead of a night of live music.
5. Supernova: Get ready for a show each night as stars ignite. Ever look up at the sky and see a new star shining bright, as if it appeared overnight? Chances are it's a nova, a long dormant star that's decided to reignite. If you’re really lucky, it might even be a supernova - a star explosion occurring roughly once every 50 years in our galaxy.
6. Spectrum Of Happiness: Sway away and create a beaming rainbow. There's nothing quite like reaching to the skies on a swing as a child, but Spectrum Of Happiness comes close – and this swing set is for everyone.
7. Inside Out: A celebration of Australian interior design featuring beautiful hand-drawn wallpaper and fabrics projected onto the façade of Customs House – bringing the inside, out! Pulling from the Australian Museum of Design’s expansive collection of more than 7,500 works from the '60s, '70s and '80s, Inside Out is an animated journey through three decades of Australian décor and style, brought to life by Sydney creative studio Spinifex Group.
8. Lighting of the Sails: Life Enlivened by John Olsen. Australian artist John Olsen’s vibrant paintings of life and energy within the natural world illuminates the Sydney Opera House’s sails in 2023 as part of Vivid Sydney.
Distilling the essence of Olsen’s esteemed career, spanning over sixty years, the animated artwork Lighting of the Sails: Life Enlivened spotlights Olsen’s enduring interest and fascination with Australian nature and landscape.
9. Night Walkers supersizes wondrous amphibians to highlight not just their beauty but also their ecological importance.
If you've never spent time up-close with a frog, you might not appreciate how beautiful their skin patterns can be. This intricate camouflage can, in some species, even change colour and texture!
10. Aperture: Think of landmarks like the Jenolan Caves, the Three Sisters, Australia Rock and the Royal National Park’s Instagram-famous Figure Eight pools, all made only more beautiful by their natural fractures or 'apertures'.
Inspired by NSW's many natural wonders that have been sculpted and shaped by the eroding effects of wind, water and time, this inflatable labyrinth invites us to look through the cracks formed and see anew.
11. Vivid Kids: See anew, as 12 young artists project their imaginative worlds onto one of Sydney's oldest buildings. This year’s curious kids share their inspiring visions of our native species and remind us of the importance of ensuring their survival.
Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of Vivid Kids! Children are inherently creative. They are quick learners, extremely tech savvy, and, when passionate, are unstoppable. Children offer us the gift of seeing our world with fresh, open, curious eyes, inspiring new perspectives, connections and solutions.
12. Harbour Life: Dive into the history of Australia's harbours with this stunning projection on the HMAS Vampire. Harbour Life is a moving story of the underwater world's resilience.
Swim alongside 200-year-old sea turtles; join Eora people as they fish with a spear and burra (fishing hook), while keeping the ecosystem in balance; witness the desolation of oceans as colonial settlers arrive and industrial fishing takes hold; see how conservationists are saving our sea life from pollution and stray nets with ocean-based drones and recycling efforts with local artists.
Vivid Sydney 2023 will be from Friday 26th May to Saturday 17th June 2023.
