Sensory Concerts® at Manly Art Gallery and Museum

  • Manly Art Gallery and Museum (map)

Sensory Concerts® is the brainchild of Grace Kim: a concert pianist and a mother with a fierce determination to make quality music accessible to all, without fear of social judgement. When her oldest son was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism, she noticed there was a lack of live high-quality concert opportunities for families with sensory and additional needs, commonly associated with Autism, ADHD, Tourette Syndrome , physical and intellectual disabilities.

In 2017, she piloted her first Sensory Concerts® – with small numbers, various sensory-friendly seating options, retreat space, freedom of movement, and onsite therapist support. The music is designed to calm the senses and contain evidence-based sensory-friendly musical elements. Performed by acclaimed musicians, patrons could experience “Opera House” standard performances up close and personal. The concerts are designed to satisfy both first-timers and seasoned concert goers alike.

Since the successful pilot concert, the demand for Sensory Concerts® has been growing. Presenting throughout regional and metropolitan NSW, VIC, and Adelaide, they produced their first CD thanks to the support of the ING Dreamstarter crowdfunding campaign.

They are excited to bring you their most popular program presented by creative director Grace Kim, joined by cellist Teije Hylkema (Principal Cello, Opera Australia Orchestra) and Kees Boersma (Principal Double Bass, Sydney Symphony Orchestra).

Part of the Sydney Chamber Music Festival 2023 Season.
