Being Beethoven

  • City Recital Hall (map)

Discover the story of one of the greatest composers of all time, when Ludwig van Beethoven comes to life in an engaging theatrical experience for young audiences and families.

From the producers behind Meeting Mozart, Being Beethoven blends theatre and classical music to explore his resilience and creative genius and offers insight into some key women composers of the era.

It’s 1814, on the eve of the Congress of Vienna, and Beethoven has been assigned the task of organising a gala concert for world leaders. Despite his worsening hearing loss, he works to complete Ode to Joy with the help of his loyal servant Sali and a string quartet. Alongside Beethoven, audiences meet a number of female composers who visit to present their compositions for the concert, shedding light on their talents and the underrepresented role of women in classical music.

Throughout the performance, audiences gain insight into the dynamics of sound and vibration, as well as the structure of the string family in an orchestra.

This immersive experience celebrates the power of music and perseverance, leaving audiences inspired by Beethoven's spirit and the contributions of his talented contemporaries.
