Sydney Writers' Festival 2024 Family Day Events on Sunday 26th May at Carriageworks

Sydney Writers’ Festival brings together a broad and engaged community around the sharing of books, writing and ideas. The 2024 Festival will run from 20–26 May.

Here are some of the Family Day Events taking place on Sunday 26th May at Carriageworks:

1 . Proudfoot and Friends - 9.15-10am - FEE PAYING - ALL TICKETS $10

Join award-winning children’s performer Lucas Proudfoot and a cast of unforgettable characters on a non-stop musical adventure around Pelican Bay. Recommended ages 3–7.

2. Free Kids Activities - 10-4pm - FREE

Across Sunday, visit Russ the Story Bus, the Big Family Day Backdrop, Badgemkaing with Cherly Orsini and Amanda's Craft Corner! Recommended for all ages.

3. Worst Week Ever - 10-10.30am- FREE

Join Worst Week Ever creators Eva Amores and Matt Cosgrove for half an hour of mayhem as they take you through the hit series and reveal insights into its creation. Recommended ages 7–12.

4. EMMA MEMMA - 10.15-11am - FEE PAYING - ALL TICKETS $10

Emma Memma is excited to be twirling our way to chat all about The Wheels on the Butterfly Bus and how she incorporates her love of dance, sign language and music into her books. Recommended ages 3–7.

5. Storytime with J.M. Field and Jeremy Worrall - 10.30-11am - FREE

Join First Nation artists J.M. Field and Jeremy Worrall as they share Etta and the Shadow Taboo and discuss its journey from oral story to picture book. Recommended ages 3+.

6. Story Salad Live - 11-11.30am - FREE

Join Matt from Play School and one of his super storyteller friends for a live version of the hit ABC Kids podcast, Story Salad. Rec. ages 3–9.

7. Little Lunch - 11.15-12pm - FEE PAYING - ALL TICKETS $10

In this fun-filled session, Little Lunch creators Danny Katz and Mitch Vane share hilarious insights into the creation of the books and the hit TV spinoff. Recommended ages 5–10.

8. Storytime with Aura Parker - 11.30-12pm - FREE
Come enjoy some storytelling fun with Aura Parker, the author and illustrator of beloved picture books Bowerbird Blues, Meerkat Splash and Twig. Recommended ages 3+.

9. In My Blood It Runs - 12-12.30pm - FREE

In My Blood It Runs is adapted for young readers from the acclaimed documentary about 10-year-old Arrernte and Garawa boy, Dujuan Hoosan. Creators Dujuan Hoosan, Carol Turner and Blak Douglas explore the process of translating this important story from film to the page, in conversation with Melanie Saward. Recommended ages 8+

10. Storytime with Sally Rippin and Chris Kennett - 12.30-1pm - FREE

The weird and wonderful students at the School of Monsters are everyone’s favourite friends. Join us for this storytime and activity with Sally Rippin and Chris Kennett, the creators behind these fun learning-to-read books. Recommended ages 4–6

11. Epic Illustrator Battle - 1-1.30pm - FREE

Illustrators Matt Cosgrove, Chris Kennett, Cheryl Orsini and Aura Parker are pitted against each other in a ferocious battle to determine the 2024 illustrator champion of champions. Hosted by Louise Park. Recommended ages 3+

12. Storytime with Angie Who - 1.30-2pm - FREE

Not all stories are found in books. Come explore stories told through song with acclaimed music maker Angie Who. Recommended ages 3+.

13. Eww Gross! - 2-2.30pm - FREE

Dan Marshall has written a disgustingly wonderful guide to all things yuck. He joins us to share his favourite discoveries that are guaranteed to make you say Eww Gross! Recommended ages 6+.

14. In Conversation with Morris Gleitzman - 2-2.45pm - FEE PAYING - ALL TICKETS $10

Tweet is Morris Gleitzman’s first novel since his bestselling and beloved Once series. Don’t miss hearing from one of Australia’s most treasured storytellers in conversation with Kristin Darell. Recommended ages 8+.

15. Storytime with Louise Park - 2.30-3pm - FREE

Time travelling, mysterious and magical objects, portals and hidden worlds. Discover how imagination, the real world and a touch of history can blend to create compelling stories. Recommended ages 6+.

16. Expect the Unexpected - 3-3.30pm - FREE

Join Cristy Burne for an all-new extravaganza of science, creativity and adventure. Cristy works at the intersection of story, science, technology and creativity. Recommended ages 6+.

17. The Inbe-Tweens - 3.15-4pm - FEE PAYING - ALL TICKETS $10
Too old for kids’ books? Too young for YA? Middle-grade novels are perfectly pitched for the inbe-tweens. Authors Deborah Abela, Samera Kamaleddine and Nova Weetman discuss the joy of writing for this important age group. Recommended ages 8+ .

18. Spooky Campfire Tales - 3.30-4pm - FREE

Join Ashleigh Barton and John Larkin around the campfire as they share some seriously spooky tales guaranteed to raise the hair on the back of your neck. Recommended ages 8+.
