In this school holiday workshop held in conjunction with NAIDOC Week, create an artwork that represents a place that is special to you. Recalling your memories, use text, images and repeat patterns to make a landscape image inspired by the art of Wanapati Yunupiŋu.
Wanapati Yunupiŋu etches Gumatj clan designs onto discarded materials that he sources on Country in Yirrkala, north-eastern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. He has used an old roadwork sign as the base of his artwork Gurtha 2021, on display in the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ Yiribana Gallery. In this artwork, Yunupiŋu shares the story of gurtha, a fire that travelled across a vast area of Country during the waŋarr, or time of the first morning, causing a series of significant events.
Take part anytime between 11am and 3.30pm. Materials and instructions are provided. Suitable for all ages and abilities. Children under 12 must be supervised by an adult at all times.
