This exhibition is the first of its kind in a major Australian museum and is presented as part of the Sydney International Art Series 2025–26.
Featuring works by leading contemporary artists from around the world, Data Dreams: Contemporary Art in the Age of AI throws light on how artists are engaging with Artificial Intelligence to imagine new ways of being and to explore the implications that these technologies hold for our collective future.
Data Dreams brings into focus a range of contemporary concerns, including the relationships between technology and power; how algorithms and datasets are influencing our worldviews and calling our perception of reality into question; and the immense environmental costs of the data economy. Other themes include the co-evolution of humans and machines; new perspectives on intelligence and agency; and what it means for technologies to simulate human cognition, to form memories, hallucinate and dream.
Data Dreams presents ambitious projects in a wide range of media, from the immersive and interactive to intimate reflections, each grappling with technology's impacts on humanity. Across a series of interconnected, experiential gallery spaces, visitors will discover how artificial intelligence is informing and shaping new forms of contemporary artistic practice. Artists to be announced in 2025.
The exhibition is supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW.
