OUR REVIEW - #Sydney REVIEW – MJ The Musical at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. Directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, the show didn’t miss a beat. From the very first moment - with that stunning curtain replicating Michael Jackson’s handwritten notes - to the intricate stage design, music, dancing, and iconic songs, it was all there. But as always, I’ll keep this short and focus on the cast, no spoilers.
Set during the creation of the 1992 Dangerous World Tour, the show gives us an intimate look into MJ’s life - his obsession with detail, his love for music and dance, and his determination to be unforgettable. I grew up listening to Michael Jackson, watching him on TV, and catching all his music videos so it was hard not to be dancing in my seat, singing along, and loving every second of it. The cast, musicians, covers, and production crew were all phenomenal. Some of the character transitions were done so seamlessly!
Special shoutout to @romanwbanks - beyond amazing! It truly felt like we were watching MJ in real life. He nailed the voice, the mannerisms, the energy. He brought out a side of Michael I’d never seen - the passion, the sacrifice, the relentless drive. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of watching Roman (who absolutely nailed it), or anyone doing the moonwalk for that matter. Love it!
Liam Damons was Miss’s favourite as young Michael - so much talent already! Derrick Davis as Joseph Jackson gave a strong performance, showing the tough love that shaped MJ’s passion, though at the cost of other parts of him. Josslynn Hlenti Afoa as Katherine Jackson had such a powerful voice - wow! And the dancers? Hats off to them - especially in Thriller and Billie Jean.
Duration: 2 hrs 30 mins (with a 20-minute interval). Recommended 8 years+ (mainly due to length and a few mature themes). We did notice younger kids in the sold-out crowd who were pretty happy dancing along. Great for Miss and I to catchup with Livia @chamellephoto on the night too! MJ The Musical is on now until 3rd August. Grab tickets via: https://ticketmaster-au.tm7566.net/Jz1ZOE. Now if you don’t mind me, I’ll be off practising my moonwalk and listening to MJ! #hosted #invited #mjthemusical #MJtheMusicalAU #StartinSomethinSyd #feelnewsydney #mjmusical #sydneylyrictheatre #michaelcasselgroup Michael Cassel Group MJ the Musical Australia Sydney Lyric Theatre

Australian producer Michael Cassel, alongside original Broadway producers Lia Vollack, John Branca, and John McClain, is thrilled to announced critically acclaimed performer Roman Banks will lead the Australian premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical MJ when it debuts at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in February 2025.
Banks made his historic Broadway debut in the award-winning production Dear Evan Hansen, marking the first time an African American performer had portrayed the title role. After leaving Dear Evan Hansen, Banks was cast as Howie in Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, before returning to the stage to lead the US National Tour of MJ.
Banks’ portrayal of the title role in MJ earned him both audience and critical acclaim with the Chicago Sun-Times calling him “a force of nature” while the Houston Chronicle said “What Banks does on stage as MJ is nothing short of miraculous” and the Denver Post said “The beautiful trick that Banks pulls off as the adult MJ is to embody, not merely mimic...Banks brings an aura that is his own”.
Speaking of the casting, Director and Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon said: “Sydney won’t know what hit it when they Roman explodes onto the stage. His artistry and his interpretation of the role are astonishing, we are so lucky to have him lead our company in Australia.”
MJ will mark Banks’ debut performance in Australia, and he said he couldn’t wait to bring this extraordinary production to Sydney.
Banks will be joined by Brisbane-based newcomer Liam Damons who will make his professional debut playing Michael as a young adult.
