It Takes a Village (Free) (Reviewed)

  • Art Gallery of New South Wales (map)

#sydney REVIEW - It Takes a Village at the Art Gallery NSW - Naala Badu building (North). FREE.

The exhibition invites visitors to share the space and add their own little scribble with chalk in the pastel green installation, or wander through and view artworks from the gallery’s collection.

During our weekend visit, we were also invited to grab a pencil and sketch our own piece of artwork, which our little artist friend really enjoyed.

On now until 18 January 2026. Free entry.

A celebration of family and community across painting, video, photography and installation.

‘It takes a village’ is a phrase that acknowledges the many people that raise, teach, love, console, help and stand up for us. This exhibition is about these people and the ‘villages’ we build across a lifetime.

From soulful photographs of children at play and ebullient paintings of life in remote Aboriginal communities, to an interactive installation that reimagines the classroom, the works in this exhibition introduce us to parents and grandparents, friends and siblings and aunts, sportsmates and classmates, educators and neighbours.

Bringing together over 20 works from the Art Gallery of New South Wales collection, many on display for the first time, It Takes a Village explores the joys and challenges of supporting, and being supported by, those closest to us. The exhibition gives special attention to the agency of young people in making their own communities.
