Once On This Island - A Musical

UPDATE 10TH APRIL 2025

This August, a cast of bold, brilliant storytellers will gather at the Hayes to bring Once On This Island to life – a timeless tale of love, loss, and meddling gods.

Thalia Osegueda Santos (Bearded) stars as Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl who risks everything for love. Opposite her, Alexander Tye (Bearded, Round The Twist: The Musical) plays Daniel, the wealthy boy from the other side of the island whose life she saves.

The four gods who shape their fate are: Paula Parore (We Will Rock You, Hairspray) as Asaka, Mother of the Earth; Googoorewon Knox (Hamilton) as Agwe, God of Water; Cypriana Singh (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) as Erzulie, Goddess of Love; and Rebecca Verrier (Hair, Hairspray) as Papa Ge, the sly Demon of Death.

Joining them is Zahrah Andrews (Hairspray, Passing Strange) as Mama Euralie, Sione Mafi Latu as Ton Ton Julien, Sebastian Nelson (The Great Gatsby) as Armand, Chaya Ocampo (The Questions, Chimerica) as Andrea, and Sara Camara (Rabbits On A Red Planet) and Paul Leandre Escorrido (Converted!) completing the cast as swings.

A reimagining of the Olivier Award-winning musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Anastasia), Once On This Island blends Caribbean myth with the cultures of contemporary Australia.

Full of music and magic, we can’t wait to welcome you to the island. Don’t miss out – secure your tickets today and be part of the adventure!

A tale of one young girl as she fearlessly follows her heart, defying even the expectations of the Gods

From the Tony Award-winning songwriting duo of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Ragtime) comes the Olivier Award-winning Once on This Island. This vibrant adaptation infuses its Caribbean roots with Australia’s own rich cultural tapestry, injecting new life into the Hans Christian Anderson tale, The Little Mermaid.

Ti Moune, a humble peasant girl, courageously saves the life of Daniel, a wealthy boy from the far side of the island, and soon finds herself captivated by love. Little does she know, the island’s proud Gods wager on a timeless question: which is stronger, love or death? The unwitting pawn in their bet, Ti Moune’s life hangs in the balance as she follows her heart.

This energetic and radiant score is carried by a poignant tale of love, sacrifice, and the transformative power of storytelling.
