When I watched the UK recording of Heathers The Musical late last year, before this tour was announced, I knew that I had to see this musical live and source the perfect vintage outfit to pay tribute to Heather Chandler!
The Australian cast and creatives have done an outstanding job with this production. A seriously talented bunch of actors with some seriously kick-ass voices.
Special mentions to @emmacaporaso_ and @conorbeaumont as Veronica and J.D. You two are superstars in the making!
And @calista_nelmes, @amelia_isabelle_rojas and @abigail.shar.p as the Heathers trio. You ladies absolutely nailed it and brought the sass and attitude! I first saw Calista Nelmes in Rent last year and she embodied the role of Heather Chandler last night.
And thank you @melobrienn for the kindness and care you bring to the role of Martha.
This raw and often confronting musical hits hard in many ways, but I love that it doesn’t shy away from life’s difficult conversations around sexuality, depression, bullying, loneliness, peer pressure, toxic friendships, the pressure to fit in and the consequences of wanting to be accepted.
J.D.’s simple words hit a chord with me last night “Pain brings clarity” and I couldn’t agree more.
At its core, Heathers reminds us that we are not perfect. We can be vulnerable, we care deeply and, sometimes, we set unrealistic expectations on ourselves and others.
Although dark at times, there is plenty of light and laughter throughout, giving the audience those much needed moments of relief amongst the heavier themes.
I cannot wait to see it again! Tickets are already at the ready for me before it finishes in Sydney on 19 September, before heading to Perth to complete the tour.
