'Catherine the Great - An Art Book for Kids' Review & Giveaway
To coincide with the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces' exhibition Masterpieces from the Hermitage: The Legacy of Catherine the Great currently at the NGV international, the NGV along with Melbourne based artist Kat Chadwick have created Catherine the Great: An Art Book for Kids.
Masterpieces from the Hermitage: The Legacy of Catherine the Great showcases one of the world’s greatest art collections. Featuring works by artists including Rembrandt, Rubens, Velázquez and Van Dyck, the exhibition offers more than 400 outstanding works including one of the finest groups of Dutch and Flemish art to come to Australia.
I am looking forward to spending a couple of hours visiting this amazing exhibition! Although beautiful and appealing, the exhibition is more suited to school children than littlies so it will have to be an adults only visit I am afraid. Little ones might get restless without the interactive setups that other exhibitions like 'Tromarama for Kids' offer, I know little Miss would! But that doesn't mean little ones should miss out!
Catherine the Great: An Art Book for Kids has been written and developed especially for this exhibition with little ones in mind. Little Miss and I loved the look of this book so much when we saw it at the NGV shop that we couldn't resist getting our hands on it!
Interestingly enough, Catherine the Great wrote Russia's first children's book - how fitting! Presented in chapter form, young readers will discover this powerful monarch’s rapid ascent from anonymity to world-wide fame and her unquenchable thirst for learning was demonstrated through her passion for collecting art and treasures.
Little Miss was drawn straightaway by the cute illustrations of the animals throughout the book especially those of Zemira, Catherine's Italian greyhound and her family! She thought Zemira was very cute and was very attentive when I read out pages of the book to her because of it.
The book also features art from the exhibition so little ones don't miss out on those beautiful paintings.
The best thing about this book that little ones will enjoy the most is the drawing activities throughout. Little Miss was ready with colouring pens on hand to colour in Catherine the Great's beautiful crown, jewellery, draw in some food on dinner plates or decorate crockery.
We really enjoyed this book and the drawing activities that came with it. I especially enjoyed reading out the lovely story to little Miss who kept asking where Zemira the greyhound was!
