Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures - Review

After a short stay at nearby Kiama, we headed the next morning for a nature visit at the Illawarra Fly Treetop. Illawarra Fly has also been on our to-do list and definetely something which we thought the kids would also enjoy especially with the Gruffalo Spotter app for kids.

On our arrival, we took the trail among the beautiful trees and visited the fairy garden. The walk and Treetop walk is suitable for all ages and fitness levels and is a very nice experience among the Illawarra rainforest. A great thing to do to enjoy nature, birds around and fresh air.

We then fired up the Gruffalo Spotters App where the app and trail are based on the best-selling picture book The Gruffalo written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Kids and their parents can interact with the 3D characters on the self-led trails, look out for clues and find characters and take a selfie with ha!

A new version of the app has since been released with additional features and new gesture-recognition technology making the experience truly interactive. We did find the Gruffalo in the end but we won’t spoil its location.

We then took on the 500m walk through the treetops which is 20 to 30 metres above ground. Some areas were very easy to walk through, just two areas suspended above the air which sway a little which might make some people uneasy.

We then took the walk to the next level with a walk up the spiral tower stairs which is 45 metres above the forest floor and opens up to amazing views from the escarpment over the Illawarra, superbly uniting the mountains, farming land, bushland and the sea. A nice feeling to be so high up and a nice workout for those legs with all those steps ha!

We did not elect to do the Zipline tours as little Mister is still a bit little and little Miss not sure about the height just yet but definetely something to come back for in the future.

We really enjoyed our walk around and on the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk last holidays. Such an experience being amongst the trees at that altitude definitely something to remember and the Gruffalo Spotter along the walking trail made it fun for the kids too.
