Australian Sports Museum MCG - Game On - Melbourne - Review
Back in April, Kate took her little ones to the Australian Sports Museum at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). They climbed, interacted with many aspects of the museum and played many sports including Cricket, AFL, Basketball, Soccer at the Game On! Gallery.
They explored the world of sports in so many ways and it was incredible for them! From the AFL Gallery, Sporting Nation Gallery, Cricket Gallery, Olympic Gallery, MCG Museum and more! Sports loving kids will love this place!
Sports fan will also love playing all the different sports around the Game On! room. From racing, pedalling, surfing, basketball, soccer, cricket, AFL to rock climbing and more, there’s lots of touchscreens to help sports fans along the way. There are also many areas for kids to play sports and put their skills to test.
AFL fans will love the Australian Football Gallery filled with the history of the game since it came about till now. Fans will see the evolution of the game as well as footy jerseys, footy balls, memorabilia, premiership cups and more. Kids can also climb all over the AFL footy balls and watch some AFL videos and take five.
The Cricket Gallery of course is a must as the Australian Sports Museum is based in the iconic MCG. Lots of interactive opportunities to learn about the game, the Baggy Green and the history of the game from triumphs to losses and scandals.
Kids and their parents/carers will also enjoy learning about the Olympics Games in the Olympic Gallery. The Olympic Gallery will walk visitors through Australia’s participation in the games from 1896-1912 to now.
Did you know that Australia is one of the few countries in the world to have participated in every Summer Olympic Games? To date, only five countries have: Australia, France, Great Britain, Greece, and Switzerland.
You can also see official mascots, uniforms, medals, official posters, memorabilia and more from both Summer and Winter Olympics as well as footage from the games and plenty of Melbourne 1956 and Sydney 2000 info too. Kids can also jump on the “unofficial mascot” wombat created by Sydney cartoonist Paul Newell with Roy and HG in the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics.
Other galleries in the Australian Sports Museum include The Sporting Nation Gallery and the Horse Racing Gallery where kids can learn about Horse Racing, see their horse run around the track and do some colouring too. The Sport Australia Hall of Fame is also a great place to celebrate Australia’s sporting heroes, the greats who have excelled in their sporting lives. Each member is named on the plaque wall, and detailed via the interactive touch table in the gallery.
Kate’s kids were also very lucky on the day to see the AFL Richmond Club 2017, 2019 and 2020 Premiership Cups on display.
The Australian Sports Museum is a unique sports museum that sports fan will love and Kate and her little ones highly recommend! Perfect to visit daily or during the school holidays when special kids events are on.
