Neighbourhood Earth - ICC Sydney - Sydney - Review
We headed to the Neighbourhood Earth a few weeks ago at the ICC Sydney. This award-winning exhibition combines the latest science with cutting edge technology to create the ultimate space experience.
Space loving fans will enjoy this exhibition which focuses on planets around the earth and how we have explored them. When you first arrive, you are welcomed with a fascinating earth, cosmic screens and interactive floors.
Visitors can then look at the anatomy of a space suit, have a look at a small model of a lunar roving vehicle and admire the history of exploration in space through a full chronology starting in the 1800s. Kids can find out lots of information and investigate different planets via the standing interactive screens.
The multi-sensory cinematic session is the main event of the exhibition and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We learned about planets little Miss heard about at school whilst her brother enjoyed the floor projections. Make sure you check when the next session is on when you arrive to either go straight through and watch or wait in line.
Neighbourhood Earth was developed in conjunction with the US Space & Rocket Center and NASA’s George C. Marshall Space Flight Center and tells the story of space science and exploration as never seen before.
The other sections of the Neighbourhood Earth exhibition show the different models, spacecrafts and tools used in space explorations. Little Miss liked listening about the stories about the Hubble Space Telescope, the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers and their achievements on Mars. The models were very well made and had good explanation.
The last section of the exhibition had various hands-on activities. Kids were interested and enjoyed lifting the weight of planets and weighing themselves to figure out their weight on different planets. Little Mister found it hilarious that his weight was 0.8 kilos on Pluto versus 21 kilos on Earth and understand gravity in the process.
Hands-on activities include a table orbiting the sun around all the different planets, looking at different orbits, building and launching a rocket.
The kids’ favourite part of the Neighbourhood Earth exhibition was the drawing area where they coloured and drew on aliens, spaceships and space printouts and brought them to life by scanning them into the system and seeing them on the screen. We spent a good amount of time there which was nice.
Kids can have a peek inside a space shuttle to see what grows in space and the view from a spacecraft. Little Miss and her brother also really liked the cool motion detection game on screen where they could pretend to be in a space suit and hop to Mars, Earth, the Sun and other planets.
Space-loving kids will enjoy this exhibition and will keep exploring the different sections of the exhibition beyond the multi-sensory cinematic session. Neighbourhood Earth is on now at the ICC Sydney until 25th January 2022 due to popular demand - book here.
