Illuminate: How Science Comes to Light at Scienceworks in Melbourne
Last weekend saw the opening of the brand NEW Scienceworks exhibition in Melbourne called Illuminate! Illuminate is all about how science comes to light in different ways. Children and their carers will explore difference aspects of sight and light through six festival zones. Mailed with Love and her little gang of science seekers popped in at the media opening event to test out the new exhibition and were fascinated with all the lights and colours. We also received some cool pics from the Melbourne Minor gang showing other zones to complement our review - thanks ladies!
Kids will be drawn to the Chroma Zone with all its bright fluro colours as they enjoy making objects and letters freehand or with the help of the Pixel Mixer Colour Mixing Chart. They can also understand the difference between primary and secondary colours with the use of the chart. It’s a great one for little ones to understand colour concepts and practice their fine motor skills too.
They will also love Colour Connections where they bend and mix light through colours in different ways with tubes and vertical plates and using other round shaped lights.
They can shop away and tend to some tunes at the Sensor Sonic’s area with the Scanner Jam and dance to the beats in the Laser Beats room (not pictured). Kids can also play musical notes by setting a colour using small wheels and spinning the big wheel to play a colourful song in the Chromakeys section. How fascinating!
The Mirror Mirror zone is all about reflection of course with the gorgeous insta worthy Kaleidoscope reflections. Kids can also play around with mirrors and discover different views of themselves as they reflect their image.
And at the end of the day, it’s all about having fun with lights, shadows and colours! Kids will find all type of gear to play with and make shadows at the Shadow Stage in the Light & Shade zone.
They can also mix, animate as part of the Wonder Vision zone by checking out the Inverse Eyeverse or hide away in the Unseenery area or watch little dudes spin and move up and down in the Turn Style section (not pictured here) but you can view it on our Reel.
The Refractory is the last zone where kids will enjoy looking through the Macro Micro microscope at all different things in all the lights and the Mega Heads section where kids can stand behind magnifying glasses (not pictured here).
You can use this guide to explore the six Illuminate festival zones when you’re visiting. As you can see there’s lots for your little ones to explore in this amazing exhibition built by Scienceworks staff purpose-built for Scienceworks - kids will love it!
Busy City Kids were hosted by Scienceworks for the purposes of a review. Travel & parking was self funded. All opinions & feedback are genuine & truthful. To book tickets to Illuminate at Scienceworks, head to their website.
