Grumpy Bums Bake Mixes - Review
Miss has been on a baking spree lately with school and just generally loving everything to do with cooking and baking. When we were contacted to review Grumpy Bums baking mixes, we couldn’t resist! The added bonus in this scenario - a cool activity to do together, a nice treat for after school with no nasties and added sugar and a great snack for kids after school or in lunchboxes or even for adults with a cup of tea/coffee.
Grumpy Bums was founded by Jo Leontiades, a food scientist and mum who has over 20 years experience in product dev, retail and manufacturing in Australia. As a parent, Jo understands the challenges parents are faced with hard choices everyday at the checkout and making sure kids snacks are healthy, with less sugar while still tasty. As a result, they created a great range of baking mixes as well as cereals.
We were gifted the Muffin Around Bundle to test out their 3 mini muffin mixes which includes Banana Bread Mini Muffin Mix, Apple & Cinnamon Mini Muffin Mix and Strawberry & Yoghurt Mini Muffin Mix. You can grab these from Coles and Woolworths individually or online on their website individually or in bundles of 4 or 3 with different flavoured packs per bundle.
We started with the Strawberry & Yoghurt Mini Muffin Mix which has some real ingredients in the packet mix including wholegrain spelt flour and freeze dried strawberries with some great fruit from an apple & strawberry purée pouch.
All mixes are super quick to put together, Miss did it all very easily and nicely - 10 minute prep and 20 mins baking. In our case, with the mini mini muffins pan it took even less time to cook the minis. It usually makes 9 muffins with the pack and you only need to add one egg, a bit of vegetable oil and water per baking mix.
The result - cute little soft and yummy dried strawberry yoghurty mini mini muffins. You can really taste the fruit flavour with these especially the little bits of freeze dried strawberries without the sugary taste which is great! These were Miss’ favourites.
We went a bit too literal and bought a mini muffin tray but I think the one we bought was very mini mini vs smaller than small size but this is perfect for school lunchboxes to pop in for small bites of joy without all the crazy sugar. Just needed to adjust the oven time a little to accomodate as these little things cook quickly.
Our next bake was the Apple & Cinnamon Mini Muffin Mix which has also some real ingredients in the packet mix including wholegrain spelt flour, cinnamon and freeze dried apple with some great fruit with the same apple & strawberry purée pouch as the strawberry & yoghurt mix.
These turned out very cute too and you can really taste the freeze dried apple bits and the cinnamon which was a favourite in the house.
And finally we baked the Banana Bread Mini Muffin Mix which also has some great real ingredients in the packet mix including wholegrain spelt flour, cinnamon and freeze dried banana with some great fruit with the date paste.
These were by far Mister and his dad’s favourite flavour as you can taste the nice apple flavour and the date adds a little natural sweetness. They have a great consistency and again perfect for lunchboxes for morning tea or with lunch and great for parents to have with a nice cup of tea too ha!
We really liked the Grumpy Bums baking mixes, they were super easy to put together, mix up & bake quickly and they also had great natural fruit flavours from the purées, freeze dried fruit or dried paste. The rest of the ingredients in the pack mixes weren’t loaded with nasty colours, preservatives or numbers that we didn’t understand. Real simple, real tasty and really easy for kids & families to bake together and great for a snack or the lunchbox and lunchbox friendly as they contain no nuts. We can’t wait to grab the Banana & Muesli Cookie Mix next time we’re at the shops and try those too!
