The Curious World of Pamela Allen at the State Library of NSW - Review

Shortly after it opened in September 2025, we headed to the State Library of NSW to checkout The Curious World of Pamela Allen exhibition and what a gorgeous space it was!

Having read numerous Pamela Allen books to the kids when they were little, this made the visit a special experience.

As you enter, you are treated with gorgeous illustrations in the hallway followed by a Mr McGee stand with all sorts of dressups. You can then enter a seperate room and see special handwritten notes, letters and books by Pamela Allen.

You can then enter a space and hide away in the tree or enjoy the interactive Dance with the Bear installation referencing Bertie and the Bear as well as other hands-on activities referencing many books including the Who Sank the Boat? book.

The kids really enjoyed this calming, inviting and interactive space. We saw Pamela Allen’s many books on display as well as prints and references to the Alexander’s Outing book and many more.

Everyone is also invited to draw their favourite Pamela Allen character in a small area of the exhibition. We even saw some uni students taking a break from exams, colouring away and exploring the books - you’re never too old to enjoy books and draw away! Checkout this gorgeous exhibition when you can! Free and on until Sunday 18th July 2027.

Checkout the State Library of NSW’s Family Room as well as The Children’s Library if you have a chance and the Newly refurbished Macquarie Street Building with a bigger Bookstore!

The Mitchell Library Reading Room is also beautiful to admire on your visit.
