Sydney Writers' Festival 2023 Family Day Events on Sunday 28th May at Carriageworks

This year, Sydney Writers' Festival 2023 brings those favourites from around the world and all over Australia to discuss how we understand the past, how we live in the present and how our words, our imaginations and our actions shape the future.

Sydney Writers Festival Family Day 2021

On Sunday 28 May is Family Day. Roll on up to Carriageworks for the marvellous magic of Family Day, a riotous celebration of storytelling and creativity that will captivate kids of all ages. The Big Backyard returns on from 10am to 4pm with free activities that will whisk kids away into a world of wonder.

Some of the free family program events include:

  • Badgemaking with Cheryl Orsini - Illustrator of over 60 books. This popular activity is recommended for ages 4+.

  • Storytime Clubhouse - Listen to your favourite children’s authors and illustrators read their stories at the Clubhouse Corner. Ages 3+ years.

  • The Big Backyard Artwork - Kids can create an amazing backdrop for the Big Backyard. Recommended for all ages.

  • Explosive Fun - Children’s author and science writer, Cristy Burne, has climbed an erupting volcano, descended into the crater of an extinct volcano, and can even spell volcano! Ages 6+ years.

  • Epic Illustrator Battle - A bunch of uber-talented illustrators will be flung together in a ferocious battle of skills as we determine the 2023 illustrator champion of champions. Ages 4+ years.

  • The Power of Story - Author talk by Charmaine Ledden-Lewis will share her love for stories and highlight the powerful relationship between images, words and our imagination. Ages 6+ years.

  • Russ the Podcasting Bus - Popular podcast series Words and Nerds is taking over Russ the Story Bus to record interviews with various stars of children’s literature. Recommended for all ages.

  • Character Construction - Some children’s characters come and go but the great ones linger. If characters are the heart and soul of a story, what makes one more engaging than the next? How do authors construct and breathe life into them? Ages 6+ years.

Some of the fee paying family program events include:

  • Double Trouble - What’s it like to work with a writing partner? Do you only have to do half the work? Do you fight constantly or is it all smiles and hugs? Recommended for ages 7+.

  • A Taste of Insects - Get buzzed about insects and all the astonishing things they do. Did you know that without flies there would be no chocolate? Ages 6+.

  • Hy-larious hyena - Harry is one hy-larious hyena, with unstoppable, legendary LOL-powers ... until one prank goes way too far and everyone nearly becomes lion lunch. Is it time for Harry to finally get serious? Hye-no! Ages 7+.

  • The Sound of Picture Books - The brainchild of composer, visual artist and author, Matt Ottley, The Sound of Picture Books is a multi-modal and immersive performance that combines music, visual images, and narration. Ages 6+.
