Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is known for his striking artworks that combine art with traditional Japanese ‘flat’ aesthetics and animation.
In the huge artwork Japan Supernatural: Vertiginous After Staring at the Empty World Too Intensely, I Found Myself Trapped in the Realm of Lurking Ghosts and Monsters 2019 – currently on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ North Building – Murukami brings together supernatural beings (yōkai), including magical cats (nekomata), in a battle against samurai, all under the watchful gaze of a giant demon cat.
In this workshop, we invite you to be inspired by Murakami’s artwork and draw your favourite yōkai and invent new ones to surround the nekomata in a giant monster skirmish.
