Osmo Math Wizard - Magical Workshop - Review

The Osmo Math Wizard kit comes with 2 games Osmo Magical Workshop and Osmo Secrets of the Dragons which are both great for kids 6-8 years. We were gifted The Secrets of the Dragons kit prior to Christmas which focuses on using non-standard units to measure and encourages kids to use a ruler to measure, you can read our review here.

This week, we were gifted the Math Wizard and the Magical Workshop kit which focuses on additions and subtractions. Kids with the use of maths can brew potions using dragon claws, eye balls, cute glow worm, magic mushrooms, gems, stars, ruby, rainbow poo and in turn help heal villagers and mend things around the Potion Room. Little Miss’ favourite potion is glow worm and rainbow poo for some reason ha! Anything to make it fun and interesting and if it means she enjoys the game whilst practising her Maths, I am all for it!

Magical Workshop is perfect for kids before they head back to school or also great to complement school this year. Little Miss is loving reviewing this app as it’s very relevant to what she does in Maths class. Each potion has several levels. When kids start a potion, they use the stickers provided and stick them to the Spell book and use the Double Sided Potion Mixing Mat (day or night) and set the board according to the potion sequence.

The Math Wizard - Magical Workshop kit comes with single red counting cubes which can be used for 1s and 10s or blue counting rods which can be used for 10s (instead of 10 single red cubes) and 100s to create potions. It also comes with a Double Sided Potion Mixing Mat which can be used for day or night. Little Miss tells me that the Day side represents additions whereas the Night side represents Subtractions.

A magical cat helps you navigate potions through Math Wizard - Magical Workshop. Every time you create potions and solve problems with villagers from the game, you receive points which you can use to bring joy around the Potion Room or buy costumes for your magical cat :)

Parents can choose the maths level at the start of the game depending of child’s abilities. This can be changed at any times. We started at the beginner level to see how the game was played and half way through the game, we changed the level to a more advanced level to match little Miss’ abilities to count in 10s, 20s etc.

To create a potion, the player needs to use the number given (left image below) or choose the number (right image below) given from each Pink and Blue Tanks of the potion mix, use single red counting cubes or blue counting rods and put them on the Potion Mixing Mat. Once each pink and blue tanks are filled, the player needs to add up both rows and put the total amount of cubes or rods in the bottom magic sparkle area.

As the player progresses through the game, potions evolve, maths problems become more advanced and players can use single red counting cubes as 1s and 10s or blue counting rods as 10s and 100s and so on.

After each potion is created successfully by solving the maths problem, the magic cat heals the villagers using the potions. Some villagers endure a spell by a tricky person to reduce their height so a magic growth potion is used. Some villagers endure a spell to increase their height so a shortening potion is used. Others endure a dark light spell so a light spell needs to be used and so on.

Apart from potion creations, fun side games are available like a timed Play Potion game as well as other cute little games.

As we went up levels and solved different potion queries as well as change over the Double Sided Potion Mixing Mat to Night mode things changed. This meant that each Magic Sparkle needs to go up to an ingredient and it changes to subtractions. The player needs to subtract the number of ingredients in the Pink Tank from the number of Magic Sparkles in the brown bottom tank to find out how many should go into the Blue Tank. Lots of thinking there! The below example is pretty simple, problems become harder as kids go through the levels of potions of the game.

The more potions are created, villagers rescued, the more joy is created, the more points are given to the player and more and more options of the game are possible like unlocking doors to more rooms in the game and so on.

What an amazing game! Little Miss and I are very impressed with Osmo Maths Wizard - Magical Workshop! The creators of this game thought of everything and so much more and I might play it when the kids are back at school! A great game using Maths to solve problems whilst using single digits as 1s and 10s and bars as 10s 100s. Perfect for little Miss as she uses the same techniques at school and great to keep improving her maths skills this year.
